TPN at CES Crowdfund Update #2: Jamie Davis on CES Health Pavilion

imabacker-560This is the second update to the TPN.TV crowdfund initiative for TPN @CES. This week, Jamie Davis of Health Tech Weekly talks about the health pavilion at CES. Jamie first joined us as a camera person at CES 2012. We found multiple health related products and the introduction of their health row that year. Since then, Jamie, Chris and Anne head up the healthcare side of TPN.TVs coverage.

It’s week 2 of our TPN.tv crowdfund!

I’m Jamie Davis, the host of the Health Tech Weekly podcast and I want to thank you all for helping our efforts to bring CES to you. The funding effort is moving along and we are all excited about the response. If you’re following this campaign and wondering what our videos do, I thought you might want an example of how our programs help people buy gifts, save their money, and even stay healthier.

My show Health Tech Weekly at HTWeekly.com is all about new and upcoming technology that helps people stay and get healthy, either through new, innovative medical devices or fitness tools and apps. CES has a growing digital health pavilion that brings the latest in medical and health technology to the CES attendees.

I’m really excited to get there and bring you my reports from the booths in the South Hall at CES 2014.

Jamie asks “Where’s the Bathroom?”

As a nurse and a journalist, I was encouraged by all of the health tech items at CES 2013. Last year I saw a bunch of wearable fitness products and mobile apps that help remind people to stay fit and healthy as well as track their progress towards fitness goals. There were also several “brain training” programs for the elderly to help improve memory and slow mental decline in progressive dementia patients.

This year (CES 2014) I expect the wearable fitness boom to continue with new products coming out from existing platforms like Fitbit as well as new sensor technology to allow these devices to detect even more about our health and well being while we’re on the go. There are also going to be more technology options looking at helping our growing elderly population keep healthy as well as get better after an injury or medical episode. I’ll be bringing that coverage to all of you right from the show floor in special video segments I shoot this coming year at CES.

All of our video interviews and product reviews from the TPN.tv team give folks the chance to see some of the top, most innovative consumer electronics products before they ever hit the store shelves (or the links online). This advance information gives people the chance to make some intelligent choices about the electronic devices they are buying or thinking of buying. Should you buy now or wait for the next, upcoming innovation in a product line? That’s why I do what I do — to inform people about what’s out there, especially in the health care space.

Who else is an important part of that equation? You! With your support as a financial backer, you help us get an important job done. I love what I do and I want to thank you for your support! If you’re on the fence and can’t decide whether to support us yet, I urge you to keep coming back and checking in with our updates here at this page.

While you’re at it, share this campaign with folks you know via social media, on Facebook, Twitter or Google+. Use the hash tags #crowdfund and #CES when you do and help us out just by spreading the word.If you’ve already contributed, thanks. I look forward to thanking all of our contributors directly before, during and after CES, so stay tuned!

Here’s another video segment, showing one of my past interviews from CES to give you an example of the work I’ve done in the past, helping folks stay healthier with mobile fitness technology. Enjoy!

Modular Robotics Makes Playing with Robots Fun for All Ages

Modular Robotics Cubelets
Modular Robotics’ Cubelets in robot form
A walk around Eureka Park at CES will always lead you to something new and exciting that will make you literally want to put your hands on it. Modular Robotics was no exception, as their namesake product allowed us to do just that. The company has created a line of blocks that all have little computer chips inside them that allow them to act and react to each other. Using blocks such as sensors, rollers, blinking lights, motors and more, you can build any type of creation you want, and then even program the blocks yourself to do things you want it to do. These cool gadgets are for ages 6-60 and are a great stocking stuffer or birthday present for anyone, young or old. You’ll want to see what we created in the video.

Meet Luci: The Inflatable, Solar-Powered, LED Lantern

Luci Lantern by MPOWERED
Luci, a solar-powered, inflatable, LED lantern by MPOWERED
Meet Luci. She’s an inflatable, portable, extremely lightweight, life-saving solar-powered LED lantern. Why life-saving? Well, for starters, for every lantern we purchase here, one Luci will be donated to a developing country to literally give them light. Founder and CEO of MPOWERED, Jacques-Philippe Piverger, talks about Luci and how she proved to be an effective tool not only during the power outages in NYC but even in developing countries that usually depend on dirty and costly fuel for energy. Luci has been such a success, in fact, that she’s reached the top spot in Amazon’s outdoor and camping category, after just only two months of being on shelves. It was really a pleasure talking to Jacques-Philippe as you could really feel the passion for his product and for the cause during the interview. It’s one of the many great things about Eureka Park at CES.

UberConference Adds Visual Interface on Audio Calls

uberconference-geekazine-cesAudio phone conferencing has not changed too much in the last few years. More and more people are using conference calls. Coordinating who is there can be one of the toughest things. Add in *73 to mute and unmute or other hotkeys that require a cheat sheet.

Uberconference wants to do away with all that by creating a simple video interface. It’s not video conferencing but it will give you an idea of who is talking. The Uberconference interface will move the people around to highlight who is talking. The interface will also give the moderator the power to fix problems. If someone’s audio is interfering with the speaker then you can just use the Uberconference interface to mute or lower the sound. You can even throw “earmuffs” on a caller so they cannot hear the conversation (great for if you have to talk to your team).

Craig Walker used to work at Google Voice. He started UberConference to enhance the audio phone conference environment. Uberconference is free – with a pay version at $10  a month. The pay version removes all watermarks, gives you a local number to work from and also can call participants at scheduled times. www.uberconference.com

Gibson Stanton SCS.4DJ DJ Turntable System

Stanton-scs4DJ-geekazine-cesIf you are learning how to DJ nowadays, you begin by putting your library onto an iPod. Stanton (by Gibson) understands that concept and has developed a device to help use that iPod in a portable player. The SCS.4DJ is a system that can get you set up for mixing music without extra equipment (besides a P.A.).

Stanton SCS.4DJ is a UNIX OS with proprietary software installed. You have two mixing units to prep songs. Additionally you have USB ports in all places to insert USB hard drives, iPods and all other drives that use USB.

Add your library into the SCS.4DJ to start mixing music right away. www.stantonDJ.com

ARIN on the Update of IPv6

ARIN IPv6John Curran from American Registry for Internet Numbers (known as ARIN)  joined us to update the IPv6 sphere. This is a crossover from IPv4 (which is running out of IP addresses) to IPv6  which offers more IP addresses than we can use. Many countries have run out of IPv4 addresses which they have to port through a gateway, which will slow down a website.

In June, IPv6 was turned on with many providers. Some of the top content is IPv6 enabled. Mobile phone data is IPv6 enabled – which are individual IP addresses. These phones are also backwards compatible.

Comcast is rolling out IPv6 (for example). If you are using an IPv6 device on the system you can turn it on and see your device run faster.

AblePlanet Gamers Choice: Gaming Headphones for XBox with Linx Technology

ableplanetAbleplanet won several awards for voice intelligability. In 2006 they introduced Linx technology (a three-tone harmonic to let you hear signals). Since then, gamers wanted to get that same technology in their headsets. That is where Gamers Choice comes in.

This is a series of modular headphones. They come in 8 colors – Purple, red, orange, blue and more. This is completely modular so if you are on a PS3, you plug into the 3.5 inch jack. If you are on PC, there is an adapter. If you are an XBox gamer, plug in the USB dongle to use it. Change the plug and you can use it to listen to music.

Ableplanet’s Gamers Choice starts around $100. (www.ableplanet.com)

Swizz Beatz
Swizz Beatz Officially a Monster
Just announced as Monster’s latest brand ambassador, business mogul and world-famous hip-hop mogul, Swizz Beatz, was in attendance this year at the Monster booth. He will also be signing onto the executive board as he’s purchased a co-ownership stake in the company. In this exclusive interview, we touch upon the deal with Monster, what he plans to bring to the table and more. Swizz also goes into detail about what’s in store for him moving forward and how he’s happy representing the Monster brand. Ironically, Swizz also created Monster Music Group a few years ago, featuring up-and-coming hip hop talent.

Seems like this was a perfect match.

Accidentally Extraordinary Brings Touch-Sensitive Controls to Headphones

Accidentally Extraordinary
Accidentally Extraordinary lets you really touch your headphones
Something really is accidentally extraordinary about some of the products and companies we see at Eureka Park at CES. Accidentally Extraordinary is one of those companies. The made-in-Oakland, touch-controlled headphones were one of the truly new ideas found at this year’s largest innovation event and they definitely turned some heads. The concept is simple: take your headphone cable and make it touch sensitive like everything else you own now. Swipe for volume up and down, tap to take calls and more on these extremely flexible and lightweight earbuds. And while the gadget was only a mockup, you could really tell something good could come from this idea, so long as it’s executed properly. Their web site right now is simply a call to investors, but if you categorize yourself as such, be sure to help these guys out. We love the concept.
