It communicates via bluetooth to your smart phone app, sending your temperature, heart rate, SpO2 (oxygenation) level, blood pressure and heart ECG in just 10 seconds.

The app allows you to monitor different profiles for all of your family members and track their vital signs over time. The device is an important tool and the data collected can be used by you to communicate information to your doctor you would ordinarily have to go into the office or emergency room to collect. Now, with the Scanadu Scout, you get to collect that information at home and maybe put off an office visit or ER trip and just talk with your doctor from home.

Reebok Checklight Impact Sensor Improves Sports Concussion Awareness

While at the CES Unveiled event this year, Health Tech Weekly host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic stopped by the Reebok booth to see what they’ve developed to improve concussion and head injury awareness in sports. The Reebok  CHECKLIGHT™ is a wearable sensor that athletes wear under their helmets to detect any impacts to the head. In sports, impacts are a part of the game. CHECKLIGHT™ alerts athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and parents to the severity of impacts.

Jamie chats with Paul from Reebok about how the CHECKLIGHT™ works. The device is worn attached to a thin skullcap that can be comfortably worn under any type of sports helmet. There is also a sweatband version that can be worn in sports without helmets like soccer, rugby or field hockey. The device is simple to read. It has three lights on the back of the band. Green indicates no significant impact, yellow alerts to a moderate impact and red signals a potentially significant impact. The device doesn’t show the presence or diagnosis of injury, just a measurement of the force received by the head but it can be used by parents, coaches and trainers to indicate whether further medical evaluation might be needed.

Nest, known for its groundbreaking interactive thermostat and mobile device app for controlling your home heating and air-conditioning, is now following up this success with a new device called the Nest Protect. Acton M-Scooter Gives Portable Mobility to City Dwellers on the Go at CES

The M-Scooter is designed to easily convert from sitting or standing positions so the driver can ride however they want. The motorized scooter is called “super-foldable” so that urban travelers can use and store it easily wherever they go. The scooter’s motor has a 15 mile range and is perfect for that “last mile” commuting from parking garage to work. It can also be used for transportation around a large workplace complex like a warehouse.

The M-Scooter weighs in at under 70 pounds and can accommodate riders of up to 300 pounds. Tom Paul from United Healthcare talks with Chris about how their customers want to engage with them via digital channels.

Patients want to monitor their health, learn about healthy initiatives and treatment alternatives, and get their insurance information via online and digital channels. Because of this, United Healthcare is involved in numerous initiatives to encourage healthy behaviors and communities through digital means. These include programs like their Dance, Dance, Revolution game programs and contests in community schools and health education programs promoted online.

One new digital initiative they recently announced is “My Easy Book.” This new program allows users to look up a healthcare provider, schedule an appointment and pay any fees or copays, all online. Another new program is centered around providing high quality, informative and interesting online education for diabetes patients. The best part is that United Healthcare is providing many of these services to both members and non-members, a clear indicator of their commitment to ongoing community health and wellness.
