OnStar in Any Car – Aftermarket OnStar System

onstar

During CES, OnStar made a great announcement. They are now selling an aftermarket OnStar system. The mirror you have seen in all GM cars can now be installed in your Ford, Toyota, Honda or even a Yugo. You can even upgrade your older GM vehicle.

The Aftermarket system will be available at Best Buy and other retailers. They recommend that a certified professional install for maximum safety.

For $299 for the OnStar and installation and $200 / year you can stay safe. I got to even test the system that Friday night as we drove from the Atomic Testing Museum to the Venitian. The system brings a human element even when you are trying to find a destination. Use it as a GPS, information system or emergency outlet.

NEC LT-W
NEC LT-W

With a 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, this tablet is set more like a book. Light in weight – only 530 grams – this dual screen tablet lets you read on one side and watch video, or have another reference on the other.

This tablet hasn’t been released in the US yet, but in Japan you can get one for 44,000 yen (appx $529 US). The LT-W runs Android 2.2 and connects with Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G. The LT-W does have a USB port and headphone jack.

Toshiba Glasses Free 3D TV

Toshiba was demonstrating lots of 3D TVs in their booth at CES. 3D was the big buzz word at last year’s CES show and I wasn’t impressed.

This year all the major companies were showing 3D TVs and the technology (and price points) have improved. There are a number of issues surrounding 3D: cost, lack of content, multiple 3D technologies, and having to wear the stupid 3D glasses.

Well, Toshiba was showing off a “glasses free” 3D TV. The demo was interesting but you could tell it’s was a first generation product. You needed to be right in front of the display to see the 3D effects and it still wasn’t as good as viewing with glasses.

I don’t believe “glasses free” 3D TV (or 3D TV in general) is here for everyone, but there’s always next year.

Dexim Portable Power Solutions

At CES Unveiled, Dexim showed a number of great power solutions for your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad devices.

The P-Flip Solar Power charger uses the energy of the sun to charge a battery pack in about 15 hours. This pack can then be used to power or charge your iPhone device.

They also offer the P-Flip Foldable Power Dock which is like it’s newer Solar powered cousin but uses regular electricity to charge it’s internal 2,000 mA battery. Both P-Flip models hold the iPhone 3 and iPhone 4 models for easy viewing and movie watching.

What I thought was the most interesting product was the Visible G Charger. This is a cool wall charger that displays the charging condition in the wire that connects to your device. You see color lights pulsating through the wire as it’s charging and the pulsating slows down as the device becomes charged. The lights stop and turn off when the device is full charge. In fact, the entire charger turns off, saving electricity. Dexim claims you will save 85% of standby power used by other chargers.

Super AMOLED Screens From Samsung

Super AMOLED
Super AMOLED

The screens inside phones like the Samsung Galaxy S, are called “Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED)”. These flat screens give you a high quality in such a small device. The screen is so thin, it can be bent – if needed.

At CES we saw the Super AMOLED screens outside the devices. You can touch, flick and especially bend them. When they are in your smartphone, the brighter picture will bring a 20% longer battery life.

Liquid Image Sports Camera Masks

At CES Unveiled Liquid Image displayed their line of sports masks that can be used to take both still and video images. They have three product lines: Scuba for underwater, BMX for motorcycles and ATV, and the Summit series for skiers and snowboarders.

The Scuba masks will work down to 300 feet and last 2.5 to 3 hours on a single charge. The camera lens is located at the top of the mask in between your eyes so the camera sees what you see. There are colored LEDs and audible sounds to indicate the mode (still or video) and if the mask is recording.

All the masks support both still and video. The images are recorded to a micro SD card and a USB port is provided for downloading the images and video from the mask.

The Scuba and Summit Series also have 1080p HD versions. The standard masks retail for around $300 and the HD masks for $400.

3 Feet Smartphone, Tablet Stands

3feet
3feet

It’s always cool to see a person get inspired by a new technology. In this case, it’s about holding a smartphone or tablet on a long flight. That is what inspired 3 Feet – a stand for any device that folds flat and stows easy.

The stand also sets up in multiple positions. The cusions keep the device from moving or slamming into the 3Feet. The charger opening also allows for easy charging while standing.

Use 3 Feet to stand a device up on a plane or in a meeting. If you have a digital picture frame, 3Feet can be used to hold them on a shelf or table. It even makes good in holding up an old tablet (you know, the ones that actually hold paper…)
