ShotTracker Measures Your Basketball Performance at CES

ShotTracker Logo

Sports such as running and cycling have been well supplied for several years with monitoring and tracking devices to record and improve performance. At CES 2015, several other sports have become connected, including tennis with the Babolat Play racket as well as basketball with the ShotTracker. Jamie and Todd chat to Davyeon Ross, Co-Founder of ShotTracker.

ShotTracker consists of 3 components: a wrist sensor, a net sensor and the ShotTracker App. The wrist sensor and net sensor work together to track shots: when a player shoots, the wrist sensor sends a signal that a shot was attempted and the net sensor sends a signal indicating if the ball made it into the basket. Both signals are sent to the mobile device via Bluetooth where the ShotTracker app keeps track of the player’s activity.

The app shows statistics (shots, makes and misses), gives workouts and helps identify on-court weaknesses. Data from multiple ShotTrackers can be aggregated into a coaching version of the app, providing an overall team view. ShotTracker is available for both iOS and Android.

The ShotTracker starter kit is on sale now for $149 from the store.

CES 2014: Flir One Personal Thermal Imager with IdoNotes

Chris Miller (IdoNotes) took a look at the future of personal thermal imagery devices with the FLIR ONE™ at CES 2014. There are many practical and fun ways to use the Flir One that we explore in the video interview.  First, a quick description of what the Flir One does straight from their website:

FLIR ONE™ is a non-contact device that detects infrared energy (heat) and converts it into an electronic signal, which is then processed to produce a thermal image on your phone screen and perform temperature calculations.

The FLIR ONE™ is a case that comes in three colors for your iPhone with the thermal imaging portion easily detachable.  It utilizes it’s own internal battery supply. It weighs in at 3.2 ounces and currently fits the iPhone 5 and 5s only.  Android cases are expected later in 2014.

From using your phone for hide and seek in total darkness to checking your child’s temperature, this looks like an amazingly useful addition to your phone.

Better motion-focus for DSLR video with Canon’s EOS 70D

20130702_hiRes_dafTech_frontShooting DSLR video has often had trouble with auto-focusing on moving subjects. But Canon‘s EOS 70D is a game-changing camera with “dual-pixel CMOS AF” for continuous, smooth, auto focus.

With the EOS 70D’s touchscreen LCD screen, you can tap on any visible subject for the lens to maintain focus on the subject, even when the depth changes.

This brings DSLR video production up in line with standard camcorders, which have often been used for better action focusing.

Without “dual-pixel CMOS AF” and Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, a digital SLR would shift focus back and forth on moving subjects (and sometimes even stationary subjects, too). With this new combination from Canon, amateur and professional videographers and podcasters can now get smooth auto focus.

Also don’t forget that the Canon EOS 70D is an amazing DSLR for still photography, too!

The EOS 70D is a cropped-sensor digital SLR that can record up to 30 minutes of 1080p HD video at up to 30 frames per second. The Canon EOS 70D  camera body is priced competitively for professionals at $1,199 ($1,099 on Amazon.com) and is available today.

Tablo Takes TPN Award at CES

Tablo LogoDigital video recorders (DVRs) are commonplace but usually they’re integrated with a cable decoder. Tablo’s offering records OTA (over the air) HD broadcasts that are transmitted from local TV stations, free of charge. Still not excited? The Tablo can stream both live and record programmes to any connected device including Android and Apple devices, and set-top boxes like the Roku or AppleTV. Now that’s cool.

The Tablo contains two tuners (with a four tuner option), so can record two broadcasts at once. There’s no built-in storage but there are 2 USB ports for external HDD units to provide whatever space is needed. It’s perfect for cord-cutters. I’d love to see this come to the UK too.

The Tablo is on pre-order for US$219 and will be available in February 2014.

Gibson Takes TPN Award at CES

Gibson LogoCelebrating 120 years of Gibson, Aljon Go shows Jeffrey and Todd the superb Anniversary Edition of the Les Paul Standard.  It’s stunning both in the Ocean Water Perimeter finish, the level of detail and the technology built-in. The sound of the guitar can be changed to mimic the tone of your rock’n’roll hero and Min-ETune will tune the guitar automatically. Amazing – watch the video to see the guitar adjust the keys by itself.

There’s no doubt that this is a premium product – the price for the guitar on show is $2999 – but it’s hand-crafted in the US, taking 30 days produce. Every one is a collector’s item. Sweet.

(Is it not a little bit worrying that Jeffrey’s Google Glasses match the Les Paul finish?)

Parrot Zik Headphones with Lou Reed Settings

Parrot-ZikA good pair of Bluetooth headphones is something I look for when doing home recording.

A good pair of bluetooth headphones tuned by Lou Reed and I know I can fine tune any project or just listen to some great music.

I was at the Parrot booth learning more about Zik and how in the final months Lou Reeds’ crew helped Parrot put these settings together. Not only will you be able to set them to his tastes, but you can also adjust the headphones via a smartphone app to feel like you are in the front row or the far back.

Acton M-Scooter Gives Portable Mobility to City Dwellers on the Go at CES

Acton_mscooterChris Montera, the Geekymedic, checks out the new M-Scooter from ActonGlobal.com while roaming the halls at the International CES show earlier this month. The M-Scooter is designed to easily convert from sitting or standing positions so the driver can ride however they want. The motorized scooter is called “super-foldable” so that urban travelers can use and store it easily wherever they go. The scooter’s motor has a 15 mile range and is perfect for that “last mile” commuting from parking garage to work. It can also be used for transportation around a large workplace complex like a warehouse.

The M-Scooter weighs in at under 70 pounds and can accommodate riders of up to 300 pounds. It can be recharged in as little as 2 hours on fast charge mode or for a complete top off in 4 hours in standard charge mode. The scooter has three wheels for a solid base that doesn’t require superior balancing skills on the part of the rider. It will be available for purchase now on the ActonGlobal.com website for $1799. The M-Scooter is in a class by itself and may be the perfect mobility tool for an urban traveler you know.
