RIP the iPod 2001-2022 – PCI 294

May 12, 2022

Apple has decided to discontinue making and selling iPod Touches, the most recent iteration of the original iPod. Along with news from Apple, big things are happening at Sounds Profitable, with Tom Webster leaving Edison and joining their team.

Live Facebook recording.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. I’ve used it for years with my own RSS feed address and have never heard of it having this capability. Does PowerPress generate RSS feeds?

Answer: Yes, sort of. PowerPress generates a podcast-only RSS feed for your podcast. That means any posts that have enclosures (podcast episode files linked) will show in this special feed, but other posts that do not have media attached will not. This RSS feed is BASED on the stock WordPress site feed. PowerPress also can add podcast-related tags to any feed on WordPress.

Got a question you’d like us to answer on the show? Extras for Your Podcast Listeners – PCI 293

Todd is out and MacKenzie chats with Mike about the come and goings of well known people in podcasting, the failure of Facebook’s podcast integration and how it’s important to provide relevant content and extras for your podcaster listeners — whether that means show notes, blog posts, social media interaction or something else entirely.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. I pretty much do everything on our podcast and to me show notes are just one more thing.

Answer: Keep it simple and keep it routine. Don’t think of it as ‘just one more thing’ but instead as another thing you get to do for your audience and your growth. You get out of your podcast what you put into it. Make a template ahead of the show for the content and let the show notes follow. If you type this out it’s easy to clean it up after recording and then use it for your show notes. Utilize bullets, keywords for SEO and links.

______________

Got a question you’d like us to answer on the show? They talked about a lot of things going on in the news and some Blubrry news. Toby even pre-recorded a Pro Tip and we answered the Question of the Week. They also talked about his book Narrow Podcasting. It was a great conversation. What is Podcasting 2.0? – PCI 289

April 07, 2022

As always, Blubrry is here to break down the finer technical details of podcasting, this time specifically on what is podcasting 2.0, coming from the Podcast Index team. Once again, we’ve got big news coming from the Blubrry team; we just released a new section in our podcast statistics that displays your audience survey results. Be sure to stick around to the end where we get into the differences on how publishing works and then served to directories, similar to the discussion with podcasting 2.0.
News

The Podcast Show in London has announced the first round of speakers and sessions

What is Podcasting 2.0? Co-founder Dave Jones explains.

Daniel J. Remember, podcasting is a PULL and not a PUSH. The different apps and directories pull your feed a few times a day at most. The rule of thumb is as follows:

Apple: 4-24 hours.
Spotify: Normally less than 12 hours.
Google: Once you are in there, nearly instantly if you are using Websub (PowerPress has it) otherwise, 4-24 hours.
Overcast and a lot of other independent apps: As soon as your listener opens the app and refreshes.
Others: Don’t worry unless it’s been more than 24 hours. Most update much quicker than that.
Another tip… If you are having trouble with just one app or directory, first check with that app or directory’s support to see if something is going on.

Got a question you’d like us to answer on the show? Our team has had another lively week as we took a look back at all of our achievements over the past two years. With that in mind, remember we’ll be at Podcast Movement Evolutions in LA next week, and Kate from our production team will be joining Mike on the mic and Toby gives his opinion on whether or not podcasters should attend live events.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Be the Face of Your Own Podcast – PCI 284

March 03, 2022

One of the first things that you do when getting your podcast off the ground is creating and/or designing your podcast artwork. It begs the question… do you want to be the face of your own podcast? As in, have your own face on your podcast artwork. It’s incredibly popular, but there are no rules when it comes to podcast artwork design – which is shown in each and every podcast directory – that says you should or shouldn’t include your latest glamorous headshot.

Toby from the Pro-Production team weighs in on this topic, but not before Todd and Mike get into some industry news, and announcements from Blubrry, including some unsung heroes in podcasting that you might be familiar with.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? The better answer is that a square is the easiest shape to use in multiple places, i.e. apps and web pages. It is easier to scale to different sizes without worrying about aspect ratio. The small file size is so it loads fast and doesn’t take up too much space on people’s devices. Not as much of a problem now as it was 14 years ago, the device storage and speed are much much greater now.

Got a question you’d like us to answer on the show? Create a Podcast Media Kit – PCI 283

February 24, 2022

And there will most likely come a day when you want to be prepared to share data about your show to someone else, and you’ll need to create a podcast media kit, also known as a press kit. Hear from Todd and Mike some recommendations on what to include, when to get started and more. We’ve got lots more where that comes from, so stick around for Toby’s pro tip of the week about email segmentation, mic quality and loads of podcast industry news.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. But, if one host is on a $500 mic and the other host is on a stick mic that came with a laptop, well that isn’t going to sound great. Most importantly, background noise levels need to be the same or as close as you can.

Got a question you’d like us to answer on the show? Blubrry’s New Statistics Are Here – PCI 282

You’ll find a whole new interface and for some users (advanced), a few new metrics. Many of you know we’ve been working on this user experience release for a long time and we could not be more excited to share it with you all. We start out the episode with some Blubrry news this time, and get to industry news after as well as a best practice — research your titles — and a pro tip about co-hosts.

A big thanks to Yndia Lorick-Wilmot for joining us as podcaster of the month and stick around for her interview with Todd. Thanks for listening and let us know what you think about the stats! Fortunately, after a break, one of podcasts most well-known and respected honors is back. The 2022 Podcast Hall of Fame inductees list has been released and the awards ceremony will be hosted at Podcast Movement Evolutions in Los Angeles in March later this year. Some of which include: deciding on what type of content to publish, what platforms you’re comfortable being on, and this one can be more important than some think, the help you ask for along the way. We urge you to be wary when you begin working with or choose to hire a podcast consultant. Podcast Advertising Choices – PCI 279

January 27, 2022

Not all podcast advertising is created equal, for instance, a new study says 30 seconds is the best length for an ad. However, depending on where the ad is in the show, it could be better to go longer or shorter. There is no solid rule of thumb. And our best practice encourages podcasters to choose wisely when deciding to partner with a sponsor. Mike and Todd chat about some recent changes to Youtube creators and Spotify artists as well.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Email Lists for Your Podcast – PCI 278

We know that email can seem drab, but it can be vital for reaching your audience in a way that they actually use or respond to. In this episode we share why running an email list for your podcast is important as a creator. And mention a newsletter for podcasters to keep them informed they can subscribe to. Before we get to that, we discuss issues with Anchor, a Spotify trademark case and more.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? The problem is that an app might hit your RSS feed 24 times a day (once an hour) and someone else might have their app set to hit your feed every 4 hours and some others might hit it every 10 minutes. There is no way to really know, BUT there are a couple of ways to garner a safe estimate.

Look at an episode that is 30 days or so old. Pages are for more static content like About pages, welcome pages, pages you use for reference and that kind of thing. Not so much for ongoing dynamic content like podcasts or blog posts. Plus, Pages are never included in the RSS feed. You could (but it’s more complicated) use a Custom post type, but that is too much to go into on a podcast

Special: 2022 Podcast Prediction Show – PCI 275

December 30, 2021

For the last show to 2021, we asked our staff and on social what they think might happen in podcasting in 2022. Today’s show is a bit of a format break. Have a happy new year! See ya in 2022!

Carolyn Berry, from Adventures with Grammy, says her show will double its listeners in 2022. ( good plug! )

Maxwell Ivey Jr. from What’s Your Excuse network and the blind blogger says: I predict even more people, companies, and organizations will launch podcasts. I predict Spotify and others will continue to try to win the podcasting world like it’s a game of monopoly. And I predict that more people will be hosting with Blubrry.

Dave Keeshan from The Future is Not Set, I predict the option to open a payment stream to podcasts will increase. So far Patreon and buymeacoffee.com are sorta fits. The start of tipping, or lightning/crypto payments, or anything that can be done from a handheld device will become more common. This will hopefully happen as a result of people’s frustration with the increase of ads into their podcast experience. Hopefully, this will also lead to a more dynamic podcast, where they can be delivered with and without ads.

AND

There will be more live streaming like events/productions. Clubhouse, FIreside, Wisdom, are all chasing “something”. The thing, live, interactive audio, which can be recorded and released later as a podcast, maybe as different as radio shows are to podcasts (which are also released after the fact as podcasts)

@checkheadpod The CHECK YOUR HEAD Podcast’s prediction for 2022 is that it will be the biggest year for podcast growth as more people turn to #podcasts for safe, enjoyable & free entertainment during #pandemiclife.

Josh fromTips of the Slung I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the shows under the banners of bigger companies (in particular shows that were independent and successful prior to signing) try to break their contracts and go indie again. [ Josh – Tips of the Slung ]

Daniel J. Lewis from The Audacity to Podcast – I expect we’ll see another huge platform support podcasts—maybe Microsoft, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Also much bigger adoption of Podcasting 2.0.

Jim Malliard from The Malliard Report: I predict Spotify will close the free version of anchor and try to recruit shows to only be on Spotify, only with free music accounts.

Articles:

HotPod / The Verge’s predictions (toward the bottom of this article)

Pacific Content’s Annual Prediction article

From the Team:

Toby Goodman from Blubrry Pro Production: There will be at least one best selling book about podcasting coming in late Feb! (hint: Toby is writing a book)

Both Apple and Spotify revealed their most popular shows for listeners for the year of 2021. Infinite Dial released their findings on podcasting and media consumption, based in the UK. You’re not alone, and companies and creators alike have the same idea. I release episodes weekly (35-60 minutes depending on guests). His recommendation is to release daily short episodes (60-90 seconds) with a daily snapshot, daily update on a topic of interest to my audience. Has anyone done this?

Answer: I have a long time ago on one of my shows. To be honest, it didn’t do much for my listenership. In fact, I would say it annoyed some of my listeners. Frankly I would be annoyed if I am expecting a 30 min show and I get a 90 second show. Personally, I pick shows by length when I set up a playlist for a particular listening session. A bunch of short shows is ok grouped up, but I wouldn’t listen daily.

______________

Got a question you’d like us to answer on the show?
