Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Even Apple by Andrew McCaskey The New York Times blog entry reminds us that MobileMe and some of the problems on the 3G iPhone are the flip side of the success that Apple has enjoyed. Moving in parallel with the introduction of the App store, the stumbles of Vista, the domination of the iTunes Music Store, and the continued roll of the iPod/iPod Touch there were a group of less than spectacular also rans. The Apple /// was mentioned, along with the infamous Newton, just about eight years before its time. Lisa did not make the cut, nor did some of the other detours along the road, including a miserable set of confusing model numbers all with underpowered and overpriced versions. The Apple TV ? The jury is still out. The potential is there, but the entertainment industry makes sure that the business model is troubled and it may end up with the short life of a sickly child. The important thing to realize is that Apple, just like Microsoft are no longer spring chickens. They are well into middle age as far as corporations go. In fact, if you look at the top 20 companies from 1955 to 2005, and you will see very few that have survived fifty years. http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500_archive/full/2005/ That simple fact should remind us all that the time on top of the heap is short indeed. Nothing like a technology that has been greeted by the consumer marketplace with a huge yawn receiving a boost from your favorite lobbyist-induced regulator. For the past four years at CES, it’s always been a bit of a curiosity to wander by the HD radio booths, and try to find someone who has some interest in the products. Each year, we look for energy in this zone, and find little light and no heat. Maybe all that you really need is the right K-Street representation, and those pesky customers will finally come into line. Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Hacking the Toll Road by Andrew McCaskey The MIT article on hacking Toll Road transponders points out several issues for concern. Many interference complaints to broadcast television in the 1950’s and 1960’s actually traced back to poor manufacturing and design. The same tendency to save a few cents on a part or omit code for at least some protection to script kiddie levels of hacking continue, apparently, in all sorts of designs for various computer and wireless devices. The more serious effect, however, is the assumption by the public and the legal system that complexity equals security - that something that is obviously “high-tech” is going to be inherently stable, secure, and worthy of trust. Bad guys seem to be on top of the technology, looking for any advantage to give them a momentary edge. For example, the value of the cloned Toll Road iPass ID is not the few dollars in stolen tolls, but the ability to “prove” that you and your vehicle were 30 miles away from the crime scene. Anyone traveling who does not use a VPN on any open wifi node is asking for trouble. In places like O’Hare you will see scores of rogue “Free WiFi”, “OpenWiFi” just waiting for the unsuspecting to check a bank balance. War driving in any neighborhood will detect many “encrypted” wifi networks, 90% of which are on WEP, known to be easily hacked for a number of years. The bad guys know the tricks, but the public is the loser. Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST The Final Straw - VoIP on Airplanes by Andrew McCaskey The deterioation of the flying experience for the past thirty years is fast closing on the zenith. Just when you think that it could not get worse, along comes the confirmation that, once again, bits are bits. The Phweet VoIP system that passes short URL through Twitter connections is all that’s required, along with the Flash plugin in the browser. But, much as the comments surrounding telecommuting a few days ago, the fact that the job can be done remotely is a separate question from should the job be done remotely. In a similar manner, the fact that VoIP is possible, is, in this case irrelevant. Business travel - with the Bose headphones, laptop, iPod and DVD - is an exercise in attempted insulation at any rate. The idea of a seatmate railing on about his weekend golf game, travel plans, deal negotiation or office gossip is close to the final straw. Even in business or first class, the unintended consequences of touchscreens and video games are sufficient to allow the guy in the row behind you to keep punching you in the seat back for the entire flight. The only upside from all this airline turmoil is that the extra weight will force United to finally remove those bulky VCR’s from under the seats on Boeing 777’s that steal the underseat room of every third seat. You can only hope. I guess there is some upside. When we finally go to economy standing flights (straphangers) maybe the VoIP background chatter will pass for in flight entertainment. Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Changing Communications Modes by Andrew McCaskey I had a quick Twitter message this evening from Tim Sullivan Selling Geek Podcast , concerning the Death of VoiceMail. That linked me back to a Techcrunch article from about six weeks ago, where Michael Arrington wrote that Voicemail is dead. Please tell everyone so they ll stop using it. .. in the mid-nineties voicemail was an important productivity tool. But now an increasing number of people are just plain avoiding voicemail. It takes much longer to listen to a message than read it. And voicemail is usually outside of our typical workflow, making it hard to forward or reply to easily. The services that really make voicemail more usable are those that convert voicemail into text and then send it to you via email or SMS ( Spinvox, PhoneTag Yap and Jott, for example). For now most people don t have voicemail transcription services. So think before you voicemail, more and more people just find it annoying. I am beginning to see the evolution - I was a Twitter detractor up until my “Road to Columbus” conversion at Podcamp Ohio. Business communication is changing very, very rapidly. If you are in a fixed location, just opening up a few Skype chat windows to the folks you really need to communicate with. Or, if you are mobile, monitor their Twitter streams or set up a private Twitter group with direct messages. Lots to learn and a moving target. But changing, for sure. There were several TPN members in attendance at the Las Vegas New Media Expo, and the TPN Roundtable is a great way to get their first hand impressions of the conference - and insight into the world of podcasting a new media from a business and technology perspective. If there were one word to characterize this year’s NME, it would be “stretch” . I’ll be talking about that on Saturday.
